An MFA Program Unlike the Others

Flexible Approach

Unlike other MFA programs that require you to work in a specific genre, Mville is genre agnostic, meaning you’ll have the freedom to learn and write across areas, from poetry and fiction to screenwriting and creative writing.

Our program itself is also flexible, embracing a minimally structured combination of workshops, craft courses, independent study, and a culminating thesis. We know that no two writers find their voice and develop their style in the same way or at the same time, so our program provides the latitude you need to grow at your own pace. We also offer once-a-week evening and occasional weekend workshops to make pursuing your master’s degree even easier.

Unbeatable Community

Writing is a joyful practice, but a solitary one, and we understand that writers need community to stay grounded, find inspiration, and build relationships that will sustain their writing practice beyond their MFA years. We regularly gather together to listen to visiting writers discuss their literary craft, engage in extracurricular weekend workshops, and enjoy program BBQs. At Manhattanville, we also seek to move beyond the walls of Barat House, our creative writing cottage, to take advantage of the rich literary scenes in the Lower Hudson Valley and New York City, just a short train ride away. If you’re looking for a literary community to keep you motivated to write, you can (and will) find it at Mville.

Real-World Experience That Pays — Literally

We’re proud of the fact that our tuition rates remain reasonable and competitive, but we also understand that sometimes that’s simply not enough. This is why we’ve developed additional funding options for students to pursue.

Teaching Pathway: This unique 3-year program offers you the chance to complete your MFA and receive training as a writing instructor as you teach 1 course per semester in Mville’s undergraduate Academic Writing program. You’ll earn tuition credits for your work, so not only will you gain valuable classroom experience, but also your last 2 years of tuition will be covered.

Graduate Assistantships: Similar to the Teaching Pathway, Graduate Assistantships offer students tuition credits in exchange for working on campus at Inkwell, our long-standing literary magazine; at the writing center; or in the MFA program office. These assistantships are a great benefit, as they help you build demonstrable experience and skills in teaching, publishing, and/or marketing while also helping to keep your degree affordable.
