Writing is a joyful practice, but it is a solitary one, and we understand that writers need a community to stay grounded, find inspiration, and build relationships that will sustain their writing practice beyond their MFA years. At Manhattanville University, we all seek to move beyond the walls of Barat House, our creative writing cottage, to take advantage of the rich literary scene in the Lower Hudson Valley and in New York City, just a short train ride away. So, whether you’re looking to attend a visiting author reading, one of our annual festivals (poetry, fiction, and nonfiction are all celebrated!), a program BBQ, or listen to a graduating student reading, you can (and will) at MVille.
Teaching Pathway: This unique 3-year program offers you the chance to complete your MFA and gain training as a writing instructor as you teach 1 course per semester in MVille’s undergraduate Academic Writing program. You’ll earn tuition credits for your work, so not only will you gain valuable classroom experience, but your last 2 years of tuition will be covered.
Graduate Assistantships: Similar to the teaching pathway, graduate assistantships offer students tuition credits in exchange for working on campus at Inkwell, our long-standing literary magazine; the writing center; or in the MFA program office. These assistantships are a great benefit, as they help you build demonstrable experience and skills in teaching, publishing, and/or marketing — while also helping to keep your degree affordable.
